TANNA SMITH (18 Smack)![]() From the Hoosier state, Tanna Smith has been playing volleyball since the age of 10 and has been a setter in her volleyball career. She played club ball for WAVE and Munciana Volleyball Club where she made 4 Junior Olympic National tournamnet appearances and her teams placed in the top 10 each time. She went to Blackford High School (1996-2000) adn played varsity as a freshman. During her career in high school, she was named to the all Conference team all four years, 2nd team All State, 2nd team East Central Indiana, MVP Player of the Year (1999), Offensive Player of the Year (1998, 1999, 2000), and led her team to four conference championships. She still holds the career assists and assists per game records at Blackford. After high school she went on to play at Division II Mt. Olive College in North Carolina as a setter and OH/OP where she earned the Freshman of the Year award in 2000. She moved up to Division I in 2001 when she transferred to Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis. At IUPUI, she was a setter and captain for 3 years. She holds several records including career assists (3,814) and assists in a 5 game match (72). She led the Mid-Con Conference (now Summit League) in assists per game average (13.98) and she ranked 33rd in the country in assists per game with a school record of 12.66 average. She was a 2003 conference championship all tournament selection and conference offensive player of the week several times. throughout her career. While at IUPUI she majored in Art Education at Herron School of Art and Design. Her coaching career began by giving lessons to setters and defensive specialists as well as running her high school's setting clinics and assisting with the high school boys' volleyball team. She coached a 13/14 team for Indianapolis based Circle City Volleyball Club. From 2002-2006 she coached 15's and 16's. Her 2006 16-2's team earned a bid at the Pennsylvania Qualifier and went on to the J.O. Nationals in Minneapolis. Tanna came to Oklahoma 3 years ago. She was hired to teach art at Mark Twain Elementary in Oklahoma City and also coached with Bill Hamiter at Heritage Hall. Tanna was assistant coach as the Chargers went on to win two 4A state championships (2007, 2008). In July, 2009 Tanna accepted an art teaching position and head volleyball coaching position at Edmond North High School. She is in her third year coaching for Peak having coached 16-1's (2007-2008), 16-2's (2008-2009) and assisting Edgar Miraku with the 16-1's as that team finished 3rd in the nation at the J.O. National Championships in 2009. |
